Wilmer, Texas -- A registered sex offender, who was arrested after using the Internet to arrange sex with someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl, is running for mayor of his small town...James Brian Sliter, 42, said he is sorry and needs to prove he can be an asset to his suburban Dallas community.

No. Because I see nothing that he's done to rehabilitate himself. Placing himself in a position of community power is not rehabilitation. It's placing himself in a position of community power - exactly what sex offenders seek so they can attain artificial trust and lure others into their darkness.

NO I THINK A PERSN LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN FOR ANY PUBLIC OFFICE THAT JUST GIVES THEM FREE ROAM TO OUR SCHOOLS OR ANY OTHER PLACE WHERE OUR KIDS ARE. I THINK WE SHOULD PROTEST IN HIS AREA AND LET THE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE WANTS TO DO.

I divorced my former husband because he participated in viewing extreme porn--including S&M and live sex acts. He was eventually investigated by the FBI for his involvement with a now-convicted pedophile. An FBI agent interviewed me (thank goodness I was long-separated from my husband by that point) and told me that the FBI was certain my husband had given his friend access to the boys at a state youth home where my husband was the Director, but didn't have enough evidence to hold up in court, and that in 13 years of investing internet crimes, on my husband's office/apartment computer he had found the most disturbing pics he'd ever seen of torture and mutillation. But because the victims did not appear to be under the age of 17, they could not charge my husband.

Now, 8 years later, he's only seen our son (who was 1 when I divorced)1 time each year, and because he's remarried he is taking me to court to challenge my sole legal/physical custody and supervised visitation--AND the Court is actually entertaining this because since he wasn't charged/convicted his psych records and other info cannot be brought in as evidence. So, my son may soon be the victim of his own father, who has previously given a pedophile access to children under his care, and is very disturbed.

WHEN WILL WE STOP? This country has got to face up to the fact that when men are looking at/participating in this kind of thing there is a problem. THEY ARE NOT FIT FOR PUBLIC OFFICE OF ANY KIND, AND MUCH LESS TO BE ACTIVE, UNSUPERVISED PARENTS!!!!

My situation and this story demonstrate that we don't want people like this in public office, but we don't seem to have a problem with them being parents--what message are we sending our children with this kind of policy?

I guess I'm the odd man out on this one. I say let him work - I doubt "working in plain sight" will be as easy as he might think it will be. At least there won't be any question as to exactly where he lives and works. Some people want 15 minutes of fame and he got it, subtly flaunting his deviancy in the faces of people it sickens the most. ME!

Should that guy be allowed to run for mayor? NO WAY! Just being a registered sex offender alone is a reason to not allow him the priveledge to run for an office. Would we want a president who is a registered sex offender or who arranges to have sex with anyone over the internet let alone a 15 year old yet? Yes it may be a small town but those people need a leader who has good morals just the same as a big town needing a mayor who has good morals. Yes he says he is sorry and won't do it again but how much is that worth ?
