This was an excellent article - thanks for posting this. I almost choked on my coffee when I read Mr. Prentky's comment about "Draconian" laws, but in fact his input was the one encouraging spot in this review. That there are more laws (and treatment facilities) suggests that we are recognizing the problem and trying to address it. As most things, I don't believe this is an either/or issue. We have more laws - finally - to combat an old problem. And we have more offenders. For a fascinating and well-researched review of the increase in child violence and the role of media, you may enjoy, "Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill," by Lt. Col Dave Grossman.

Your recommending "Stop teaching Our Kids to Kill" by Lt. Col Dave Grossman is right on. I have read his book, "On Killing, The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and In Society" and I consider it a must read. These are big issues. Generations of children raised to respond violently? We have a lot of work ahead of us. I'm glad we are all coming together. It makes the task more duable.

Hi Jan! Thank you for bring up a conversation I've desperately wished would be started! Yes - the situation is much worse! People don't realize that juvenile sex offenders get free housing, free college & yes - clean criminal backgrounds for their 18th birthday!

I am the author of A Child's Heart Speaks: Surviving Sexual Abuse. When my stepson was 11, he secretly began raping my son (who was 4) each night while the family was sleeping. He also made several attempts on his life & began sexually abusing my son who was 2 at the time. My stepson went to great lengths to manipulate my children. He has the mind of an adult sociopath - and guess what... I'm sure he will eventually be working in a local daycare!

Our society has no idea how to view juveniles as predators. Instead everyone dismisses their crimes as kids just being kids. Juvenile predators get all the support, resources & protection. Meanwhile the children who are violated are completely forgotten in the system!

Hi Claire,

Your statement, "Yes - the situation is much worse! People don't realize that juvenile sex offenders get free housing, free college & yes - clean criminal backgrounds for their 18th birthday!" is mind boggling to those who are not directly experiencing such tragedy. I have heard many times before that the victim is left unaided and this is another example. Attention to children being predators has to be addressed. Next week August 8th we will be sending out another story connected to juvenile predators and sentencing.
Hope others join in this discussion so we can start turning the tide in favor of the innocent victims.
